Structural Assessment – FOWT Hull In-Place and Fatigue

📌 Mission Objective

Within the development of a floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT), the objective was to ensure global integrity of the structure under design conditions, accounting for environmental loads, electrical equipment weights.

🧠 Approach & Actions

  • Global modelling of the floater’s steel hull using Femap (finite element shell model)
  • Integration of environmental loads (wave, wind, current) and permanent weights
  • Definition of design load combinations including mooring loads
  • Pre-sizing and optimization of structural members (scantling) under ULS, SLS, ALS and FLS conditions
  • Post-processing of results and verification against DNV standards for yield and buckling strength as well as fatigue.

🗃️ Deliverables

  • Structural analysis report
  • Finite element model (Femap)
  • Python post processing routines
  • Calculation spreadsheets (Excel)

🛠️ Tools and Rules

  • Standards: DNV-ST-0126, DNV-OS-C101
  • Softwares: Femap (SOL101), Python
